Angelika Hoerle (1899-1923)

Angelika Hoerle was a German Dada artist who was a founding member of the Cologne art group Stupid and the cofounder of a Dadaist publishing house.

She was born Margaretha Angelika Fick on 20 November 1899 in Cologne, Germany. She was the daughter of cabinetmaker Richard August Michael Fick and Anna Maria (Kraft) Fick. She had three siblings, one of whom was fellow Dada artist Willy Fick.

Largely self-taught as an artist because the German art schools of the day did not admit women, in 1915 she became an apprentice milliner.

In 1919, she married the painter Heinrich Hoerle.

In 1922 she contracted tuberculosis. She died the following year on 9 September 1923, aged 23-years-old. She was buried in Cologne’s West Cemetery.
