Jozef Czauczik (1781-1857)

Jozef Czauczik was a Slovak painter.

He was born in Levoča in the family of a tobacco businessman Krištof Czauczik and his wife Alžbeta. He had six siblings. His first teacher was Jozef Lerch, a portraitist of local classicism, the author of fresco paintings of several churches in Spiš. From the autumn of 1803 he studied at the Vienna Academy. Before 1810 he returned to Levoča. In Levoča, Czauczik devoted himself to portraiture for private clients from the ranks of the nobility, burghers and craftsmen, as well as to the creation of sacred art for churches, especially in the Spiš and Gemer regions. His work goes through a development from a classicist feeling to a realistic design. In the spring of 1857 he participated in the first mountain agricultural and industrial exhibition in Košice .
