Carl Hoffmann (1802-1883)
Carl Hoffmann was a German publisher and book seller. Starting as an assistant in a bookstore in Leipzig in 1816, he eventually purchased his own bookstore in 1826 and then ventured into publishing in the 1830s, where he met with much success. He produced many popular publications and eventually established his own lithography and colorization studio as well. In the 1870s, he handed his business over to his son, Julius Hoffmann, and proceeded to produce some of his own botanical publications in the following years, including “Pflanzen-Atlas nach dem Linné’schen”, which was published by his son.
